Cervical screening: did you know you can take your own sample?
A cervical screening test every five years is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself from cervical cancer. Many people put it off because they find the test uncomfortable or awkward. If that sounds like you, it is worth knowing that you can choose to take the sample yourself.
Who the test is for
healthdirect says the cervical screening test is recommended for women and people with a cervix who:
are aged 25 to 74
have ever been sexually active
Testing is recommended once every 5 years. This still applies if you have had the HPV vaccine, because the vaccine does not protect against every kind of HPV. It also applies if you feel completely well.
If you are 75 or over, ask a GP whether you still need to be tested.
What the test looks for
The cervical screening test looks for signs of the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a common infection. Your body will often clear it on its own. Some types can cause changes in the cervix that may lead to cervical cancer over time if they are not found.
The test does not check for ovarian or uterine cancer.
Taking your own sample
Self-collection means you choose to take your own sample. It involves inserting a small swab into your vagina and gently rotating it for 10 to 30 seconds. You will be shown how to do it.
Self-collection is not advised if you have unusual vaginal bleeding, pain or unusual vaginal discharge. In that case, see a GP about your symptoms.
Understanding your result
If no HPV is found, your next test is due in 5 years.
If HPV is found, you may be asked to have another test in 12 months. Your body will often clear the virus in that time.
Some results lead to a referral for a closer look at the cervix, called a colposcopy. healthdirect is clear that this result does not mean you have cervical cancer.
Symptoms don't wait for screening
Screening is for people without symptoms. If you notice abnormal bleeding, pain during sex or unusual discharge, see a GP. Don't wait for your next screening test.
